Gordian III AR Antoninianus. Uncertain eastern mint, struck circa AD 238-244. IMP CAES M ANT GORDIANVS AVG, radiate, draped and cuirassed bust right, seen from behind / PAX AVGVSTI, Pax standing left, holding wreath of victory and transverse sceptre. RIC IV -; RSC -; Not listed in the major references; Roger Bland 23/2. 6.17g, 22mm, 8h.

Very Fine.

Coins struck with this obverse die of unusual style have been found with two different reverse types. As Curtis Clay noted in Gemini IV, lot 456, both of these reverse types have been attested as having been struck at Rome, and he therefore assigns them to this mint. However, speculation continues as to the exact mint location, with others suggesting Antioch, or Viminacium. With no evidence allowing us to place these coins definitely at Rome and because of the unusual style, a mint location in the Eastern empire is suggested, perhaps in Syria or Mesopotamia.
