Ptolemaic Kings of Egypt, Ptolemy II Philadelphos Æ Diobol. Sicilian mint, probably Syracuse, under Hieron II, circa 265 BC. Laureate head of Zeus right / Eagle standing left on thunderbolt; Galatian shield in left field, N in lower right field. Svoronos 610; SNG Copenhagen 114. 14.70g, 27mm, 3h.

Very Fine.

Daniel Wolf and Catharine Lorber posited in their paper (Num. Chron. 171) at the Sicilian provenance of a class of Galatian shield bronzes purporting to be of Ptolemy II. Though the reasons why are still unclear, their analysis shows that a 'Western Greek' style different to those coins struck in Alexandria does exist, and that co-operation between the mint specialists of Alexandria and those of Hieron II must have existed.
