Penny Wiglaf of Mercia, 2nd reign 830- 840AD Silver penny, Obv: +WIGLAF REX M cross with a pellet in each angle. Rev:REDMUDH in and between lunettes. As North 401 and BMC 117 but different obverse die with much larger central cross. Different reverse die with additional pellets in lunettes and taller lettering, which is closer to BMC example. Weight is 1.26 grammes. Recorded at the Fitzwilliam by Martin Allen as EMC 2017 0045, with eight examples recorded of this moneyer. Spink 934 and excessively rare, found in the river Thames circa 1997 and cleaned professionally, see pictures before and after. Surfaces slightly water eroded, otherwise in extremely fine condition with no cracks or chipping. No examples sold in recent years so a unique opportunity to acquire an outstanding specimen.
