Livy, in his 'Ad Urbe Condita', gives an account of the myth of Rhea Silvia's encounter with the god Mars, which led to the birth of Romulus and Remus and the founding of Rome. Although Livy's account was somewhat euphemistic in its approach to the subject matter, the myth persisted and can be found depicted on various famous artworks from the ancient world, such as the Casali Altar in the Vatican Museums.
