L. Farsuleius Mensor. 76 B.C. AR denarius (20 mm, 3.64 g, 6 h). Rome. MENSOR before, S · C behind, diademed and draped bust of Libertas right; behind, pileus / L · FARSVLEI, Helmeted figure, holding spear and reins in biga rearing right, turned left to assist togate figure into chariot; XXCT below. Crawford 392/1b; Sydenham 789; Farsuleia 2. Very fine.

The moneyer, and indeed the Farsuleia gens, is completely unknown other than this issue of denarii. The significance of the types has never been interpreted with certainty, but seems to allude to a peaceful incorporation of the Italian peoples into the Roman state after the Social War and Sulla's settlement. The issue may have been authorized as payment for the legions commanded by Pompey and Catulus that were tasked with bringing Lepidus to heel.
