British Coins, Richard II, half noble, London (c.1377), mm. -/cross pattée, dies of Edward III obverse altered Treaty and reverse post-Treaty dies, crowned king stg. facing in ship, holding sword left and shield right, no ornaments on ship, RIC over EDW, uncertain symbol before ?annulet, DI GRA, Treaty X, rev. floriate cross, arms extending from central panel with letter E with pellet to r., crowned leopards in angles, wt. 3.43gms. (S.1664/S.1523; N.1309/N.1282; Schneider 119 (same dies); obv. Webb Ware 1a), usual double strike on obverse affecting parts of legend, clipped, edge nick and graze between 7 and 9 o'clock, fine/very fine, extremely rare
This type dates to the period shortly after the death of Edward III on 22 June 1377 but before the mint had been able to cut new dies naming Richard II. As a matter of expediency it seems existing dies in use for issuing half nobles of Edward III were used with the obverse reading of the king's name altered to read RIC. Post-Treaty half nobles of Edward III are extremely rare and appear to have been struck using a Treaty obverse die combined with a post-Treaty reverse with the E and pellet in the central panel. (1500 - 2000 GBP)
