William and Mary. 1689-1694. AR medal. 5.91 gm. 25 mm. By James Roettiers. Conjoined busts of William and Mary right; GVLIELMVS ET - MARIA D G around / A burning sailing ship on the open sea; IGNIBVS IMPAR above ("Unequal to fire"). Medallic Illustrations II. 64: 267. Eimer 349. Extremely Fine; a choice blue-gray toning over fresh surfaces. Occasionally considered to have a relationship to the design of copper in this era, this was actually a propaganda medal ridiculing the French after William's victories in Ireland. The French flagship the Soleil Royal was destroyed at the Battle of La Hogue, and this biting depiction of it in flames was the British boast.

The Frank Robinson Collection.
