George III. 1760-1820. Copper pattern halfpenny. 16.27 gm. 30 mm. Late Soho from Droz halfpenny die. Undraped bust right of George III "hair in a mass of fine waves behind the neck"; GEORGIVS III D G REX around / Britannia seated left on a globe wearing a long flowing robe that covers only her right breast; BRITAN - NIA around above; 1788 below. Edge: REN[DER UN]TO CAESAR THE TH[E] THINGS WHICH ARE CAE[SARS]. Peck (BMC) 971 (R). Mishandled proof; indications of die rust on reverse; the edge has minor damage as indicated by the brackets showing missing text in the description of the reverse. Peck: "The extremely fine quality of these pieces...completely rules out any likelihood that they are restrikes by Taylor; such workmanship was quite beyond his ability." (Peck, BMC. P. 251).
