DANKL[E], dolphin leaping left within sickle-shaped band representing harbor of Messana / Design of raised and sunken squares and triangles; scallop shell within center square. Gielow 57 ff. SNG ANS 30. Rare. A few light surface marks, otherwise struck on a broad flan. and possessing a sprightly dolphin. The leaping dolphin seen here recalls the original name of Messana, Zankle ("sickle"), so named for it's crescent-shaped harbor, of which the leaping dolphin's arched shape became a visual allegory.
