MACEDONIAN KINGDOM. Alexander III the Great (336-323 BC). AR drachm (20mm, 4.09 gm, 9h). NGC MS★ 5/5 - 4/5. Late posthumous type of Ionia, Chios, ca. 290-270 BC. Head of Heracles right, wearing lion skin headdress / ΑΛΕΞΑΝΔΡΟΥ, Zeus seated left holding scepter and eagle, triskeles in left field. Price –. Bauslaugh, Posthumous –. See Leu 86, lot 361 and Gemini I, lot 88 for other examples. Extremely rare and unrecorded in standard references! A lovely piece with blue-iridescent toning. Although unpublished in the references covering the posthumous coinage of Alexander III the Great, to which this attractive piece clearly belongs, it closely matches dies previously attributed to the island city of Chios and was almost certainly minted there in the early Hellenistic era.

Estimate: 1000-1500 USD
