KINGDOM OF ELYMAIS. Kamnaskires V (ca. 54-32 BC). AR tetradrachm (29mm, 14.57 gm, 12h). NGC Choice AU 5/5 - 3/5. Seleuceia on the Hedyphon, probably SE 267 (46/5 BC). Diademed and draped bust of Kamnaskires left, star and anchor symbol behind / BΑCΙΛЄΩC ΚΑΠΝΑCΚΙΡΟΥ ΟY ΒΑCCΙΛЄY KΑΠΝΑCΚ (partially blundered version of "King Kamnaskires, son of King Kamnaskires"), diademed, bearded male head (Kamnaskires IV?) left. Alram 464. Sunrise 479. Struck in sculptural high relief on an immense flan of unusually good metal, decidedly rare thus. The Kingdom of Elymais flourished as a sub-monarchy along the upper portion of the Persian Gulf from 188 BC to AD 222, at times autonomous from, and subject to, the Seleucid and Parthian Kingdoms. The name derives from the ancient name for the region, Elam, referenced in the Bible. Its earliest ruling dynasty, the Kamnaskirids, produced an intriguing coinage blending Hellenistic and Parthian elements. The proposed date is derived here from an obverse die match to a similar specimen sold in Gemini 12 (11 January 2105), which had a date in the deep exergue off the flan here.
Estimate: 4000-5000 USD
