Marcus Junius (Q. Caepio) Brutus, as Imperator (44-42 BC). AR denarius (19mm, 3.61 gm, 11h). NGC XF★ 5/5 - 5/5. Military mint moving with Brutus in western Asia Minor or northern Greece, 42 BC, L. Plaetorius Cestianus, moneyer. L PLAET CEST, laureate, veiled and draped female bust (Ceres?) right, wearing cylindrical hat (polos) / Sacrificial axe and simpulum (or culullis), BRVT IMP below. Crawford 508/2. CRI 214. RSC 2. Very Rare! A handsome example of this mysterious issue, struck on a broad flan from dies fine style and pleasantly toned. The identity of the veiled female bust on the obverse is uncertain. She may be Ceres, the Roman goddess of agriculture (suggested by her round hat, which resembles a modius or grain basket); Crawford suggested Diana, without explaining the lack of attributes normally ascribed to this goddess. Another possibility is Libertas, who appears veiled (but without hat) on other coins of Brutus.

Estimate: 6000-8000 USD
