Aelia Pulcheria, Eastern Roman Empress (Augusta, AD 414-453). AV tremissis (14mm, 1.47 gm, 12h). NGC MS★ 5/5 - 5/5. Constantinople, struck under Marcian, AD 450-453. AEL PVL-CHERIA AVG, pearl-diademed, draped, and cuirassed bust of Eudocia right / Cross within wreath, CONOB* below. RIC X 521 (R3). Depeyrot 72/4. Exceptional for this rare type, cleanly struck on an unusually broad flan, with a serene portrait.Pulcheria, daughter, sister and wife to three different East Roman emperors, played a critical role in maintaining the East Roman regime in the tumultuous fifth century. Born circa AD 398 to Arcadius and Aelia Eudoxia, she had a far more dominating personality than her timid younger brother, Theodosius II, for whom she served as regent during his minority. Under her guidance, the East Roman Empire successfully installed her nephew, Valentinian III, on the Western Roman throne (AD 424-425), while to the East, a brief war against Persia was successfully prosecuted (AD 421). When Theodosius was killed in a riding accident in AD 450, Pulcheria briefly ruled as sole empress before bowing to demands that she marry and thus choose a suitable man to rule as Augustus. She wisely picked the lowborn but capable Marcian, who proved to be the strong, even-handed ruler the Empire needed.
