Australia
South Australia. British Colony - Victoria gold "Adelaide" Pound 1852 MS62 NGC, KM2, Fr-3. Type II reverse. An exceptional representative of this scarce gold type that was issued by the Assay Office in Adelaide--a town of importance based on its proximity to the gold fields. Containing full-bodied flash that easily cascades both sides and deeply impressed designs that retain a pleasing sharpness throughout. As is indicated in the SCWC, this denomination had an initial reported mintage of 25,000; however, a substantial amount of that original number was melted as the gold content surpassed its face value. To confirm this, recent reviews of auction records produce a limited amount of examples to compare, and the census reports of NGC and PCGS reveal less than 15 pieces certified finer, with only 54 graded in total. An exciting issue that is beautifully designed and in a solid, coveted state of preservation.
Estimate: 25000-35000 USD
