General Melgarejo silver Medal 1865 MS62 NGC, Potosi mint, Fon-9671, Bur-92, 43.7gm, 47mm, issued to praise Melgarejo as "Hero & Savior." Obv. Athena left with sword and shield. Rev. Melgarejo's name, "JENERAL-MARIANO-MELGAREJO," with a wreath. A superb example of this rare medal. The strike is nice for the issue, with slate-gray toning and minor marks. The praise for Melgarejo was short-lived, as his rule as President of Bolivia (1864-71) was marked by corruption and a total inadequacy that led to his exile, in 1871, to Peru, and his assasination on November 23 of the same year.
