Republic brass Pattern 50 Centavos 18-- (1873) MS64 NGC, San Jose mint, KM-Unl. Reeded Edge. Struck by the mint shortly after the master dies were received from Germany and never produced as a type due to the specified 0.835 fineness that became infeasible due to the silver-gold exchange at the time. Much finer than the NGC-graded MS60 that brought $10,637.50 in our January 2007 auction and undoubtedly the finest example of this rare brass pattern extant, with fully pronounced design elements, minimal handling over each side and bright golden fields that shimmer throughout. A real prize for the specialist!Ex. Richard Stuart Collection
