James II gold "Elephant & Castle" Guinea 1687 AU50 NGC, Royal mint, KM459.2, S-3403, Fr-296. A rather presentable example of this issue, made widely popular by the Elephant and Castle privy beneath James' bust and the accompanying story behind its usage. While highpoint softening from this piece's time in circulation is apparent on James' most pronounced hair curls, few accompanying marks are observed, and traces of luster brighten the surfaces when the coin is swirled beneath a light. An ideal candidate for date set representation as such.
