Great Britain
George III 1 Shilling 6 Pence (18 Pence) Bank Token 1813 MS66 PCGS, Soho mint, KM-Tn3, S-3772. An exceptional survivor of this short-lived type, with a sheath of gray patina in the open fields and flashy yellow and golden hues that surround the legends and central raised surfaces. Very well struck with almost no visible evidence of handling as well. Presently the single finest example graded by PCGS or NGC and for the collector attempting to assemble an elite set of the series, an example that should certainly qualify as attention-worthy.During the late 1700s and into the early 1800s, the state of finances of Great Britain suffered greatly due to military conflicts held with a long list of countries, most notably the United States of American in their war for independence and against Napoleon's France. As a result, the Royal Mint lacked the funds to issue new coinage, ceasing the production of copper and silver coins in 1775 and 1787 respectively. The resulting shortage led to the issuance of many private copper issues in the 1790s that today are referred to as "Conder tokens" after the pioneer in this collectible field, James Conder, who first published a catalog in the late 18th century. In the early 1800s, this same shortage bled over to silver coinage, and the Bank of England gained authorization to help fill this void by striking tokens at Matthew Boulton's Soho Mint. In an attempt to stabilize the economic system, the Great Recoinage of 1816 marked the resumption of major coinage issues at the Royal Mint.

Estimate: 800-1200 USD
