Republic silver "Caballito" Proof Essai Peso 1909 PR64 NGC, Paris mint, KM-Pn179var. Raised lettered edge variety. A very rare pattern of this beloved "Horse Peso", differing noticeably from the adopted design of the following year only in its usage of Pillet's die signature and the addition of "ESSAI" on both sides. Graded as a near-Gem by NGC, this piece is quite likely the most visually sublime toned example extant, showcasing a mesmerizing blend of purple, blue and golden-yellow tone over both sides that is amplified by the underlying reflective fields. Closer inspection yields only trivial marks and strike detail that has been brought to full completion, the edges even showing sharply squared off. A certain Gem in terms of eye-appeal and an absolute prize for the collector of Mexican patterns or crown-sized issues of the world.
