Carol II gold "Galbenul Mare" Medallic 12 Ducat 1939 MS61 NGC, Bucharest mint, KMX-MG2, Stam-106. Mintage of 95 pieces. Engraved by E.W. Becker. A massive and very rare gold issue struck in the centennial of the birth of Carol I, featuring Carol II on horseback in the vestments of the Order of Michael the Brave paired with a fanciful reverse engraving of a scytheman mowing a field. Not surprisingly, given the diminutive mintage figure for the emission, only three examples of this type have been certified by NGC or PCGS, only two of which are in Mint State. The present offering bears light handling marks equally interspersed throughout the fields, none worth individual mention, as well as a long tripartite die break that runs from the top of Carol's helmet along the length of his cape into the horse's tail and from the mid-point of that break along the reins to the horse's nose. One of two types in this module issued in 1939, each with a mintage of 95 pieces, another emission of the Galbenul Mare medals would take place in 1940 to celebrate the 10th anniversary of Carol's reign, these two types with a mintage of 348 pieces each. The more common types from 1940 generally hammer in the range of our estimate here, which we suspect will turn out to be quite conservative indeed.

Estimate: 20000-30000 USD
