CHINA. Yen Shi-San (Yan Xishan) Copper Medal, ND (ca. 1920). BOLD EXTREMELY FINE.
30 mm. The obverse features only the bust of the General, facing nearly completely right. The reverse with a crossed rifle and hoe, the quadrants formed each enclosing a Chinese character. Stamped into the bottom of the wide border appear the figures III.07.2.12.04. The medal is suspended by a loop and a short length of copper chain. Yen Shi-San (1883-1960) was a Chinese warlord who controlled the province of Shansi from the 1911 Revolution to the 1949 Communist victory in the Chinese Civil War. In charge of a relatively small, poor, remote province. He was able to survive the machinations of Yuan Shi-kai, the Warlord Era, the Nationalist Era, the Japanese invasion of China, as well as the subsequent civil war, being forced from power only when the Nationalist armies with which he was allied had completely lost control of the Chinese mainland. Subsequently he briefly was Premier of the Republic of China in Taiwan (1949-1950). A significant figure in modern Chinese history, Yen has long been viewed by Western biographers as an important transitional figure who advocated using Western technology to protect Chinese traditions, while at the same time reforming older political, social, and economic conditions in a way that paved the way for the radical changes that would occur in later years. Smooth dark brown copper surfaces with no significant wear or distractions, save for a bit of dark green oxidation that extends from about 7:30 on the obverse, over the edge, and onto the reverse rim at 4 o'clock or so.
BOLD EXTREMELY FINE.

Estimate: $350.00- $500.00
