Chinese "Opium" Scales (2), a type of steelyard scales, as described above in the footnote, pan diameter 132mm, with bone arm handle for balance for the counterbalance, pan with many impressed markings including date 14.5.1868, Chinese characters and other numbered markings (probably certifying correctness in weighing; a second example as a two pan balance known as a money scales with 2 x 48mm pans and with a metal arm supporting both pans and a pointer for balance; lot includes 2 stamped weights for the 'opium' scales. Very fine and both very scarce. (2) Provenance - Ex Patrick J. O'Rourke Collection. See note below. The scales in the second example described below, has for its use needed to be accurate on the one hand and small enough to be easily transported from one place to another. Most money scales, therefore, have their own, usually fitted, metal or wood containers. Money scales can be also described as equal arm balances,
