Queen's South Africa Medal 1899, (type 3 reverse), - five clasps - Cape Colony, Orange Free State, Transvaal, South Africa 1901, South Africa 1902. T.Penny. Surgeon. Engraved. Hairlines, otherwise extremely fine. Provenance - Dr Francis Penny studied medicine at King's College, London where he was a Warneford Scholar and in 1884 qualified for the diplomas, M.R.C.S.Eng and L.S.A.Lond. He was a house-surgeon at King's College and later held posts at the North Devon Infirmary, Barnstaple and the Doncaster Infirmary. Apparently he was also a brilliant half-back of the Barnstaple Football Club. He served as a civil surgeon in the war in South Africa. In a letter to a friend Dr Penny wrote, 'I was coming home this month, but now have taken on as senior medical officer of Steinacker's Horse, so shall not be home for a year or so, as I hear it is to be a permanent corps, even after the War is over. I am to rig up in all the trappings and decorations of a captain in His Majesty's Army, with the special tabs of the Medical Corps.' Post war his interest in travel and exploration led to various medical appointments in mining companies. For about six years he was medical superintendent at the Mount Vernon Sanatorium. Dr Penny, aged 65, died in Doncaster Infirmary on 15 April 1928 from injuries received in a car accident five days earlier at Rossington where his car overturned. With research.
