Memorial Plaque WWI, named to John Lowery, 84 in front of lion's back leg and WA (Woolwich Acton) mark on reverse. Extremely fine. Provenance - John Joseph Lowery, butcher, age 18, born at Bendigo, Vic; Enl.18Jun1915 at Melbourne, Vic, previous service of 4 years with Senior Cadets at Bendigo attaining rank of Sgt; to Gallipoli 25Oct1915; L/Cpl 21Aug1916, T/Cpl 01Feb1917, Cpl 28Mar1917, L/Sgt 02May1917; KIA 02Oct1917 at Belgium - M.Gun Sgt Joe Lowery took part in an attack on the German lines at Broodseinde on 2.10.17. He reached the objective safely but was killed by enemy shell-fire while digging in near Zonnebeke Ridge, death being instantaneous. He was buried by his comrades in the vicinity of the trench and a cross was erected over the grave. Commemorated at Menin Gate Memorial, Ypres. With copy of service file and some photos.
