Cilician Kingdom, Tarkondimotos I, (39-31 B.C.), issued at Hieropolis-Kastabala mint, AE 22, (5.57 g), obv. Tarkondimotos head right, wearing diadem, circle of dots, countermarked with anchor in left field, rev. Zeus enthroned left holding Nike & sceptre, [BA]SILE[WS] behind, [T]APKONDIM/OTOY before, traces of FILANTWNIOU in exergue, (S.5682, RPC 3871, McClean 9135 (Pl.330, 11 p.304), BMC 1, (p.237), SNG Levante 1258, Lindgren 1656). Dark brown patination, very fine and rare. Provenance - Ex Dr Adrian Carr Collection and purchased from Najaf Coins in 2002. This coin is of particular significance as it has a countermark of an anchor which has been suggested to represent the battle of Actium.
