Seated Half Dollars
1876 50C Open Bud, WB-101, MS65 PCGS. The Type One reverse with a split berry (open bud) confirms the WB-101 designation, although numerous die pairs were undoubtedly required to accomplish the large mintage of more than 8.4 million pieces. It is amazing so few Gem coins or finer exist from such a large mintage in the Centennial year. This is a primarily brilliant and frosty example with deep and abiding mint luster. Gunmetal-blue and orange-gold toning at the borders verifies the original surfaces. A dot of similar toning is noted on Liberty's left (facing) elbow, a useful pedigree marker. Population (all varieties): 21 in 65 (3 in 65+), 11 finer (2/17).
