Early Dimes
1798 10C Large 8, JR-4, R.3, MS61 NGC. The usually seen Normal Date or Large 8 variety, with five berries on the branch on the reverse. This impressive Mint State representative shows lustrous, light-silver accents among intermingled shades of gold, russet, and steel-blue toning, resulting in a stunning display. The JR-4 variety is noted for its flat-top 1, small 7, and larger 8 versus other varieties, but it is the outsized 9 that dwarfs the other digits in the date. All 1798 dimes are exceedingly rare in Mint State. This is a wonderful opportunity to obtain a high-end 18th century type. Census for the variety: 3 in 61, 4 finer (2/17).
