Mercury Dimes
1916-D 10C AU58 Full Bands NGC. One of the most celebrated rarities among 20th century coins, the mintage of just 264,000 pieces is by far the lowest of the series and solidifies the issue's status as not only the key issue of the Mercury dime series, but also earns it the number 65 slot on the Garrett and Guth list of 100 Greatest U.S. Coins. (Surprisingly, the 1895 Morgan dollar is ranked below it at number 66)!
This sharply struck example is nearly entirely brilliant and lustrous, with silver-white surfaces that are essentially untoned save for a few powder-gray speckles. The Full Bands designation, while normally reserved for Mint State coins, is a nice endorsement of the fully impressed reverse. The strike on the portrait is sharp but not full, with slight blending at the hairline. A few hair-thin lines in the right reverse field are microscopic and do not distract.
