Proof Seated Quarters
1868 25C PR66 PCGS. Briggs 2-B. The proof dies with the 1 triple punched. Quarter dollar output declined significantly after the outbreak of the Civil War in 1861. Mintages remained low through the mid-1870s. The year 1868 was typical of the period. Only 29,400 circulation strikes and 600 proofs were manufactured. The former are exceedingly rare in high grades, and collectors frequently turn to proofs instead. This spectacularly toned Premium Gem specimen showcases melded shades of blue, green, violet, and peach-gold with areas of partial brilliant over Liberty and the eagle's right (facing) wing. The eye appeal is unimprovable. Population: 11 in 66, 0 finer (2/17).
