Standing Liberty Quarters
1916 25C MS63 Full Head PCGS. CAC. Dozens of PCGS Registry Sets are being formed for the popular Standing Liberty quarter series, and many of these are either missing the 1916 altogether or at least lack a Mint State Full Head example. Even some of the complete sets lack the first-year key in Mint State. Is the 1916 Standing Liberty quarter really that difficult to acquire? In the absolute sense, no; but the degree of quality that most Registry Set collectors seek does present a challenging pursuit. Unless a collector has the means with which to put down half the price of a small house on this one coin, the 1916 is not easily acquired with attractive features. Lower-end Uncirculated pieces, particularly Full Head examples, frequently come dipped and brightened in an attempt to hide evidence of high-point album friction. Given the typically weak luster of this issue, even one dip to remove amber toning from the high points of the devices can have detrimental effects on the overall eye appeal of the coin. Thus, whether for Registry Set competitors or general collectors, low-to-middle-grade Uncirculated examples like the present represent a scarce opportunity to acquire a moderately affordable 1916 quarter in Mint State Full Head with pleasing aesthetics. This Select Full Head piece offers satin luster with original olive-gold and pale lavender toning over each side. A loupe fails to reveal any major abrasions, and the eye appeal is outstanding.
