Standing Liberty Quarters
1916 25C MS64 Full Head PCGS. The 1916 Standing Liberty quarter was released into circulation in January 1917 along with the first batch of 1917 Type One quarters. While many examples were snatched from circulation (or included in rolls, to be discovered later), many others circulated to the point that the dates wore off of the coins, a design flaw that went uncorrected until the mid-1920s. Even dateless 1916 Standing Liberty quarters are in demand and can occasionally be cherrypicked from accumulations of common 90% silver coinage. Of course, even with a well-worn reverse, one can tell from the absence of stars below the eagle, the different arrangement of peripheral stars (if any remain), and the feather tips free of the first A in AMERICA that the quarter is a Type One. But the obverse of the 1916 versus the 1917 Type One is the telltale, of course. Even many dateless 1916s show the half-reed cut out in the "bead and reed" border, a concession to make room for the top of Liberty's head that is absent on the 1917 Type Ones. For example, a PCGS Genuine example that we assessed as AG Details, cleaned and damaged, lot 3558 in our Central States Signature (Heritage, 4/2011), shows the half-reed feature clearly, despite the presence of only a suggestion of the lower curve of the 6 in the date and no trace of the other digits.
This is an unquestionably original example of this first-year key. Each side is richly toned, and differing shades are evident on each side. The obverse displays progressively deeper golden-russet toning toward the margin, while the reverse has a significant presence of lilac with gold interspersed. The strike is strong throughout, not just on the head of Liberty, and there are no mentionable abrasions on either side.
