Standing Liberty Quarters
1916 25C MS64 Full Head PCGS. CAC. Most 1916 Standing Liberty quarters struck were already in circulation by the end of 1917, although collectors' chances of finding an example were slim. A premium for Uncirculated examples of the date was almost instantaneous after the 1916 was recognized as a low-mintage key. A handful of coin dealers stocked current issues in those days, and Mint State examples of the "New Type" bearing the 1916 date were advertised for as much as a dollar apiece. The retail collector market for the issue continued a rapid climb as the challenge of finding an example of the date in circulation began to sink in with searchers. Circulating examples of the 1916 issue eluded collectors so much that some were still unclaimed as late as the 1940s, turning up in the New York Subway Hoard, which was amassed during that period.
Today, the allure of the 1916 Standing Liberty quarter continues, as does strong demand for Uncirculated representatives. This Choice Full Head example displays traces of light champagne toning over satiny, well-preserved surfaces. The strike is far better than seen on many other Full Head coins -- Liberty's head can actually be called sharp, and there is noticeable definition on the breast and gown folds that is missing from most other 1916 Standing Liberty quarters.
