Standing Liberty Quarters
1918/7-S 25C FS-101 AU55 PCGS. Although some collectors consider the 1918/7-S to be unnecessary for a complete Standing Liberty quarter collection, its prominent placement among the series in the Guide Book and decades-long history as one of the most challenging acquisitions in the date and mintmark set make its inclusion essential in the minds of most series enthusiasts. The variety was first recognized publicly in the late 1930s, when a Mint State example was offered in a Barney Bluestone auction and realized a then-remarkable price of $26.25. Since then, numerous circulated pieces have come to light, but Uncirculated coins and even high-end AU representatives have remained scarce and highly sought-after.
This Choice AU representative displays above-average definition of the shield and head, although neither are full. Satiny fields illuminate light golden and pale multicolor toning on each side, while high-point wear on the devices defines the grade. This is an unusually attractive overdate quarter, particularly for this grade level.
