Standing Liberty Quarters
1923-S 25C MS66 Full Head NGC. Ex: Pittman. Described in the Pittman catalog as "A sharply struck, highly lustrous specimen with just a trace of golden toning," although such words hardly do this piece justice. Liberty's head is razor-sharp, and the shield rivets and eagle feathers are bold. A loupe fails to reveal any of the usual light slide marks over the high points of Liberty's figure, and truly the only abrasions that keep this piece from a Superb Gem grade are a tiny tick on Liberty's shin and a graze on the eagle's breast. Metal flowlines produce a vibrant cartwheel effect in the fields beneath the delicate, original toning. Struck from unclashed and unlapped dies with maximum relief of the design. This is a 1923-S that will please even the most discerning Standing Liberty quarter specialist. Census: 27 in 66 (1 in 66+) Full Head, 6 finer (2/17).
Ex: John Jay Pittman Collection, Part II (Akers, 5/1998), lot 1419, which realized $4,125.
