Early Half Dollars
1794 50C O-105, T-3, R.5, Fine 12 PCGS Secure. Tompkins Die State 1/2. A pleasing example of the first-year Flowing Hair design with a reported mintage of 23,464 pieces. Remarkably, the Mint required 11 die pairs to strike the such a small number of coins. The O-105 die marriage is the second-most available variety for the year, yet it is still scarce, as are all 1794 halves. This attractive coin shows sharp obverse definition for the grade, with only slight loss of detail at TA of STATES where the reverse die cracked. Later strikes show considerable sinking of the die at the upper reverse. The warm-gray patina deepens at the margins, while marks are limited to a few light abrasions. There are no visible adjustment marks on either side.
