Bust Half Dollars
1820/19 50C Square Base 2, O-101, R.2, MS65 PCGS Secure. Ex: Eliasberg/Kaufman/Link. The 1820 mintage of 751,122 pieces is lower than that of all other Capped Bust, Lettered Edge issues, with the exception of the 1807 (750,500 pieces struck) and the very scarce 1815/2 (just 47,150 pieces). This example is the exceptional Eliasberg/Kaufman/Link specimen, lightly toned in translucent slate-gray and vibrant gold hues. Attractive steel-blue accents at the borders join amazing cartwheel mint luster that flashes across the smooth and frosted surfaces.
As always in the Bust half series, it is the overdates that attract most of the attention from collectors. Of the two 1820/19 varieties, the Square Base 2 O-101 is the scarcer type overall, yet it offers more high-grade Mint State examples. Leading the way are two Gem Uncirculated coins that historically vie for finest-known of the variety.
The current piece competes at the top of the O-101 Condition Census with the former Suros/Pogue coin, which sold for $47,000 in Part II of The D. Brent Pogue Collection (Stack's Bowers -- Sotheby's, 9/2015). Both coins at one time resided in MS66 NGC holders, and were subsequently reholdered by PCGS -- the more deeply toned Pogue specimen as MS65+ PCGS, and this lightly toned coin as MS65 PCGS Secure. Struck from a slightly later die state with a fine crack through the lower pair of olive leaves, we suggest the present example is arguably the better-struck of the two pieces. Razor-sharp definition exists on the obverse motifs and on the eagle's plumage and talons. A few minor ticks and light lines are visible under a loupe. Population (for the O-101 variety): 2 in 65 (1 in 65+), 0 finer (2/17).
