Seated Half Dollars
1851 50C WB-101, Die Pair 6, R.4, MS65 PCGS. Normal Date. A 2001 article by Dick Osburn greatly increased the awareness of the 1851 issue, which was struck in the volatile time following an influx of gold from California, upsetting the ratio of silver to gold. Many 1851 halves were melted when the intrinsic silver content of a half dollar exceeded fifty cents in value. This is a bright, highly lustrous Gem that is struck from an early state of the dies and is fully defined in all areas. Originally toned, the obverse retains much brilliance with scattered patches of aquamarine-blue, olive, russet, and umber-gray toning around the margins, while the reverse displays pleasing hues of reddish-gold. Only the most minor, tiny ticks are seen with a glass, while bright mint luster swirls across the satin-smooth fields and lightly frosted motifs. Population (all varieties): 2 in 65, 1 finer (2/17).
