Barber Half Dollars
1898-O 50C MS65 PCGS. CAC. Ex: Friend. The low-mintage of 874,000 pieces and a scarcity of coins in all grades qualify the 1898-O as a key series issue, although it is not as highly regarded as it perhaps should be. This beautifully toned example was once in the Friend Collection. It displays coruscating mint luster with vibrant shades of peach-gold, robin's egg blue, and lilac-gray, perfectly matched one side to the other. The strike is uneven -- reasonably bold on the obverse, but less-so on the reverse, where the eagle's neck, shield corner, wing junction and leg all show the light strike that typifies this New Orleans issue. The date is recut, most visibly at the ball of the 9. Population: 8 in 65, 5 finer. CAC: 3 in 65, 3 finer (2/17).
