Franklin Half Dollars
1949 50C MS67 Full Bell Lines PCGS. The PCGS CoinFacts plate coin. The second-year 1949 Franklin half dollar was not hoarded to nearly the same extent as the 1948. In A Guide Book of Franklin and Kennedy Half Dollars (2011), Rick Tomaska wrote this of Superb Gem examples with or without Full Bell Lines: "Extremely rare. Only one example has been certified in MS67 to date, graded by NGC. The rarity of the 1949-P in this condition is not a surprise to any experienced Franklin collector, and is further evidence of the tremendous rarity of high-grade Mint State Franklin halves in general." The NGC coin the author refers to was sold as lot 699 in our 2008 ANA Signature sale, where it realized $14,950. No other example has appeared at auction since that time, according to our records. PCGS now reports two submissions in MS67 Full Bell Lines (2/17).
The obverse features a uniform overlay of blended crimson, reddish-violet, and orange patina, while the reverse mixes similar hues with areas of brilliance. Fully struck design elements include complete delineation of the bell lines -- a trait rarely found on coins of this issue. The underlying surfaces appear virtually pristine. A spectacular opportunity for the dedicated specialist.
