Early Dollars
1795 $1 Draped Bust, Centered, B-15, BB-52, R.2, XF40 PCGS. Bowers Die State IV. Tempering of the steel dies at the early Mint was not an exact science, and the BB-52 variety with its re-centered Draped Bust portrait cracked early on in its use. A triangular die crack in Liberty's hair above the ribbon is an unusual location for a die crack and oddly shaped. The reverse die fared no better, also developing cracks and die flaws in the legend and especially in the area near OF. This XF example is from a middle state of the dies with sharply struck obverse motifs. The reverse is less sharp, with remnants of adjustment marks visible with a glass at the margins and angling up through the eagle's tail and right (facing) wing. Pleasing olive-gray surfaces retain traces of luster and show few non-Mint related marks.
