Early Dollars
1796 $1 Large Date, Small Letters, B-5, BB-65, R.2, XF40 PCGS. Bowers Die State II. The BB-65 is best known for a diagnostic die lump between I and C in AMERICA -- an internal die break that grows to indicate progressively later states of the die. In this relatively early stage, the lump does not touch the adjacent C. Pleasing bluish-gray overtones grace the golden-gray surfaces of this collector-grade coin. Moderate wear appears as light-gray accents on the high points. A sharply defined example, with a small planchet void near star 4 but only minor marks elsewhere. No adjustment marks are seen.
