1798 $1 Small Eagle, 13 Stars, B-1, BB-82, R.3, XF40 PCGS. Bowers Die State III. Although BB-82 is frequently available in the absolute sense, we have only handled a few high-grade coins in recent years and none in Mint State. Even AU examples are genuinely rare. This XF coin is in the finest grade that is usually available. The strike is even and well-centered, and the devices retain strong detail. Nonetheless, deep adjustment marks crisscross the obverse portrait -- a characteristic more often seen near the borders on this variety. BB-82 is one of only two 1798 die pairings with the Small Eagle reverse, being widely popular as such. BB-82 is the more common of the two varieties overall by a small margin, but in high grade it is the scarcer.
