1798 $1 Large Eagle, Pointed 9, B-24, BB-124, R.2, AU53 PCGS. Bowers Die State I. A rare early die state. The obverse does not show lapping on the stars or at Liberty's top curl, and the reverse features a fully sharp leaf beneath C in AMERICA. Light adjustment marks angle through the date area across the portrait, best seen with a lens. Attractive, medium silver-gray toning deepens at the borders with traces of golden luster shining through the natural patina. The strike varies -- sharp in most areas, but weak at the bust point and at the corresponding reverse at OF. BB-124 has blundered field stars, where the Line Star Pattern is placed too high and the star tips run into the clouds.
