Trade Dollars
1873-S T$1 MS65 NGC. Ex: Rev. Dr. James G. K. McClure. Trade dollars were struck for the first time in 1873 and the San Francisco Mint was the primary coining facility for the denomination throughout its short life as a business-strike issue (1873-1878). Struck to act as an acceptable medium of exchange in trade with the Far East, the 1873-S claims a nominal mintage of 703,000 pieces. The great majority of the coins fulfilled their intended purpose and were later melted in China and India. Probably none were saved by contemporary collectors and the survival of a few high-grade specimens, like the present coin, was just a matter of chance.
This attractive MS65 example exhibits well-detailed design elements, with just a touch of the usual softness on Liberty's head. The well-preserved surfaces display satiny mint luster and blushes of lavender, gray, and champagne-gold toning. Only a handful of survivors can match the quality of this remarkable first-year Gem. Census: 3 in 65, 1 finer (2/17).
