Trade Dollars
1875-S/CC T$1 FS-501 MS63+ PCGS. Type One Reverse, Large S. The remnants of a previously punched CC are visible beneath and to the right of the primary mintmark, identifying this well-known Guide Book and Cherrypickers variety. FS-501 is the more dramatic of the two overmintmark varieties of this date and is seen more often than the FS-502. Since the Carson City Mint was an active facility in 1875, it is hard to understand why two reverse dies intended for use there ended up striking coins in San Francisco, with over-punched mintmarks. Perhaps the dies were still unused when the Carson City Mint switched from the Type One Reverse to the Type Two that year. Records indicate nearly 4.5 million Trade dollars were struck at the San Francisco Mint in 1875. It is certainly possible that facility needed more than their allotted number of dies later in the year, to accomplish that huge mintage. Perhaps Mint officials felt it was more efficient to send the unused reverse dies from Carson City to San Francisco for use late in 1875, rather than preparing new dies in Philadelphia for shipment all the way across the continent. No documentary evidence has been found on this subject, but this scenario seems convincing.
This Plus-graded Select specimen exhibits sharply detailed design elements in most areas, with just the slightest softness on the eagle's right (facing) claw. From a late state of the dies, an extensive network of peripheral die cracks is evident through the letters in the reverse legend. Low-intensity shades of lavender and pale gold toning blanket the lightly marked surfaces, with satiny mint luster underneath. Population (for the variety): 10 in 63 (1 in 63+), 9 finer (2/17).
