Three Dollar Gold Pieces
1882 $3 Repunched Date, FS-301, MS63 PCGS. All of the business strikes of this date have the 2 in the date first punched much too high, then mostly effaced, with the second 2 in normal position. Despite the Breen-6395 listing in his Encyclopedia, there is no "perfect date" business strike. This is an issue that, despite its stingy emission of 1,576 pieces, was saved in sufficient quantities to ensure a small but adequate supply of Mint State examples. This appealing piece shows a two-toned copper-gold and hazel-gray obverse, with an amber-gold reverse and a few scattered, light abrasions that help define the grade. Housed in a green label holder. Population: 42 in 63, 35 finer (2/17).
