Early Half Eagles
1802/1 $5 BD-4, R.7, AU58 NGC. Bass-Dannreuther Die State c/b. A very rare die marriage with two pick-up points. A leaf tip points between the RI in AMERICA, and the 1 underdigit is centered within the 2. The date is double clashed within STATES, and the left obverse border is slightly buckled. Probably no more than 10-12 examples of the BD-4 remain extant in all grades. This is a generally lustrous straw-gold half eagle with a strong strike and only a hint of friction, limited to the forehead and cloud centers. Despite the 2006 publication of the well-done Bass-Dannreuther reference, collecting early half eagles by die pairing remains the province of a few elite specialists. Nonetheless, varieties of the greatest rarity have enormous market potential, and the present piece should be the subject of enthusiastic bidding.
