Early Half Eagles
1802/1 $5 BD-8, R.4, AU53 NGC. Bass-Dannreuther Die State b/a. Faint "waves" at the top of the date indicate die clashing, while the stars appear bolder and closer together than the Bass-Dannreuther plate coin, suggesting an unlapped die. The BD-8 variety features a high 1802/1 overdate, and it is somewhat more-available than any of the other 1802/1 varieties -- yet an estimated 150 to 200 known survivors confirm it is not readily found. This About Uncirculated example displays medium-gold patina that deepens at the borders to an orange-gold color. All of the motifs are sharply rendered, while traces of mint luster remain in the recesses. Abrasions are of minor severity, with surfaces that seem to approach Choice in all regards.
