Early Half Eagles
1813 $5 BD-1, R.2, MS62 PCGS. Bass-Dannreuther Die State b/b. BD-1 is the more plentiful of the two 1813 half eagle varieties, and it is also an ideal choice to represent this elusive type. Most later dates in the series were heavily melted as the bullion value of the coins surpassed the face value. The present coin is a scarce Mint State example, showing a bold strike throughout the central devices and the border stars. The dentils are complete around each. Light handling marks on each side determine the grade in the absence of individually significant abrasions. The luster in the fields is original.
