Liberty Eagles
1839/8 $10 Large Letters AU55 PCGS. The first issue of this two-year type is far too rare in AU condition for most type collecting pursuits, as only 80 to 100 examples of that date are known. However, the 1839/8, Type of 1838, gold eagle is a more comfortable acquisition in this high of a grade. About Uncirculated coins are still scarce, though, and collectors will have limited opportunities to acquire high-end examples. This Choice AU representative is sharply detailed on the central devices but a trifle weak on several peripheral stars. The bright yellow-gold surfaces exhibit light, scattered abrasions consistent with the grade. Population: 8 in 55, 19 finer (2/17).
